Senior Microbiologist (Molecular Microbiologist)

The successful candidate will lead the microbiology lab and is in charge of the biological characterization and optimization of novel molecules from the company’s innovative technology platform. The position is reporting to the Head of Antibiotic Research and Early Development and manages direct reports.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining the microbiology laboratory
  • Key functions include performing microbiological tests and scientific research in support of the discovery of new antimicrobial products
  • Recognition of key issues and develop the approach and design of projects with some input and relatively little supervision
  • Actively seeking to develop novel methods in support of product claims
  • Work spans experimental design and implementation to final assessment
  • Core member of project teams and will represent the company at scientific conferences and meetings
  • Expect cross-functional collaboration with other scientists, and management professionals on multidisciplinary projects
  • Additionally, the maintenance of quality management systems in the microbiology laboratory is expected

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in microbiology, molecular or cellular biology, or related biological science field
  • Minimum of 5-10 years full-time Microbiology Laboratory research experience in academic and/or industrial settings
  • Extensive hands-on experience in a variety of antimicrobial test methods
  • Direct experience in determining the mechanisms of antibacterial action and resistance development
  • Experience in microbial techniques, cultivation, characterization and identification, in vitro susceptibility, bactericidal/bacteriostatic assessments, microbial physiology
  • History of publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience with pathogenic bacteria, molecular genetics, high-throughput screenings
  • Experience in working in BL-2 laboratory operations is a plus
  • High level of creativity and innovativeness
  • Recognized as an internal expert, exhibiting a superior knowledge of research and development principles and techniques in microbiology
  • Detail oriented, with the ability to work within a team, yet thrive as an individual contributor
  • Well-developed interpersonal abilities, with likely proven supervisory or technical leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects of varying complexity
  • Relevant working/residency permit or Swiss/EU-Citizenship required
