Supervisor, Laboratory Operations – 100%FTE

Our client, an independent affiliate of Roche, is a world-leading company providing in-depth genomic insights and who develops, manufactures, and sells genomic profiling assays based on next-generation sequencing technology for rare and common cancers. The company has over 1,700 employees and has locations throughout North America and Germany. 

We are currently looking for a Laboratory Operations Supervisor on a contract basis for 12 months in Germany. In this role the Supervisor will have direct supervision of 3-5 team members and be responsible for performing all aspects of complex patient sample testing, such as solution and reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, and tasks that pertain to the handling and testing of patient specimens.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Processing and preparation of clinical samples and retro-and prospective study samples for histology, extraction of DNA/RNA samples, execution of DNA sequencing at high-throughput level (NGS) according to established SOPs 
  • Operating automated liquid handling platforms for sample processing
  • Complete projects in accordance with level of expertise and deliver results with minimum guidance, review and write SOPs as needed
  • Participate in reagent and assay quality control and validation as needed
  • Demonstrate commitment to quality and continuous improvement
  • Validate new assays for clinical operation according to ISO 15189 standard
  • Coordinate Pathology Review with Pathologist
  • Staffing clinical laboratory with appropriately skilled employees
  • Responsible for training and supervision of the lab team, apprentices, and direct reports ( 3-5)
  • Organization of routine workflow and lab team (rosters, shifts, ordering of new instruments to expand capacity and improve workflow)
  • Serve as contact person for professional questions and brief employees on the execution of analysis
  • Close communication and cooperation with all internal departments in Germany and US
  • Monitor equipment performance, operations, and maintenance
  • Perform Supervisor checks of the lab tracking forms / EBRs
  • Other duties assigned by the lab manager and lab director

Qualifications and Experiences:

  • Successfully completed a natural science apprenticeship (MTLA, MTA, chemical laboratory assistant, CTA or equal) with professional experience in the lab environment. Alternatively, Bachelor’s degree in natural science (biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology or similar)
  • 2+ years of relevant lab experience in a certified and regulated laboratory environment
  • 1-2 + years of leadership experience as a supervisor, leader or depute of a supervisor/manager
  • Experience in molecular genetics, especially around NGS technology, as well as experience working in an accredited diagnostic laboratory are advantageous
  • Familiarity with high through-put platforms and common molecular laboratory equipment (pipettes, thermocyclers, liquid handlers etc.)
  • Experience with ensuring and maintaining integrity and quality of the lab (sample processing, equipment, SOPs)
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Power Point
  • Strong working knowledge of English and German, especially with terminology specific to the lab
  • Well organized and reliable team member with ability to lean new tasks in appropriate timeframe
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interface effectively with a wide variety of internal clients
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with strong attention to detail in a business with changing priorities
  • Ability to execute independent judgement, demonstrate flexibility and professional maturity to readily understand priorities and anticipate needs
  • Ability to bring innovative thinking and ideas to solve problems and improve any and all phases of laboratory operations
